CLINTON — Clinton’s public schools earned the highest possible academic rating for the 2017-18 school year.

According to results released today by the Mississippi Department of Education, the Clinton Public School District is an “A” rated school district with an overall score of 689.

“Today’s announcement is the culmination of a lot of preparation and hard work by our students, faculty, staff, and families,” said Dr. Tim Martin, superintendent of schools. “While we are pleased with our district rating, we know we still have a lot of work to do. We will continue to focus on research-based best practices in our classrooms and work with each student to do his or her best.”

The A-F grading system is set by state law, and is designed to inform parents and communities how well their schools are educating students. CPSD’s score places the district fifth overall among all Mississippi public school districts, behind Petal, Booneville, Oxford and Enterprise (tied score), and Ocean Springs.

The grading system considers several indicators, including how well students perform on state tests, whether students are showing improvement on those tests from year to year and whether students are graduating on time. The system also factors in how well schools are helping their lowest achieving students make progress toward proficiency.

CPSD’s overall academic rating is an A, the highest possible rating a district can attain. School ratings are:

  • Clinton Park Elementary, A
  • Northside Elementary, B
  • Eastside Elementary, A
  • Lovett Elementary, A
  • Clinton Junior High, B
  • Sumner Hill Junior High, A
  • Clinton High School, A

All schools in CPSD are rated B or higher. Clinton Alternative School and the CHS Career Complex are not assigned a separate grade under the accountability system.

Northside’s rating is a B this year despite an increase in its test scores over last year, due to the rating formula and how lower grades are assigned grades. All schools must be assigned a letter grade according to federal requirements, but Mississippi’s state accountability testing begins in third grade.

For school districts divided by grade and not zone, this means that lower elementary schools with no tested grades are assigned a rating based on scores from other schools. In Clinton, Northside and Clinton Park are rated based on scores of students who are tested in grades 3 and 4.

“Clinton Park’s rating and part of Northside’s rating are based on test results from Northside and Eastside,” Martin said. “So these ratings are determined by students who left these schools 1-4 years ago.”

One issue for concern statewide was unusually low scores on the fourth-grade English Language Arts test. This dip was largely responsible for Northside’s “B” rating, despite the school earning higher test scores and proficiency rates than last year.

“It is complex and confusing,” Martin said. “But we are recognizing Northside internally for the gains and growth that students achieved. There is always more work to be done, but we are very proud of all our students and schools on these ratings.”
