Before Thursday night’s home opener, there were many questions about how the Arrows would respond after their 2016 6A Championship run, and after losing notable senior talent.

Those questions were answered as the No. 10 ranked Clinton Arrows put up a hard-fought effort to the No. 6 South Panola Tigers.

Coming down to a last-second long field goal, Clinton could not secure the victory, and lost only by one point.

The 2017 season opener started off with an Arrow touchdown by QB Walker Burchfield on a one-yard run.

South Panola answered with a touchdown, but missed the extra point.

Clinton’s new QB Hunter Hulsey threw a 5-yard pass to Haven Barnes for a touchdown. Clinton led 14-6 at the end of the first.

One minute into the second quarter, the Tigers completed a 37-yard pass for a touchdown, but failed to make the two point conversion.

Clinton kicker Tucker Barefoot kicked a 13-yard field goal to put the Arrows up again, 17-12.

With one minute left in the first half, South Panola responded with a 50-yard pass for a touchdown, but did not complete the second two-point conversion of the night. South Panola went into halftime leading by one, 18-17.

The third quarter offered no change of the scoreboard, with South Panola still leading by one.

Senior QB Walker Burchfield rushed for another touchdown with a 2-yard run, putting Clinton in the lead, 23-18. However, the Arrows do not complete the two point conversion.

After the Tigers recover a fumble by Clinton on the Arrows’ 23-yard-line, and capitalize on the turnover, the Tigers led 24-23 after failing their third two-point conversion.

After another Arrow fumble, South Panola runs the clock down to just under a minute and punt to the Arrows.

Clinton’s final hope was a 55-yard field goal attempt by Barefoot. The long field goal was no good, and the Arrows dropped their home opener by one, 24-23.

The Arrows look to even their record when they travel to Vicksburg on Friday to take on the Gators. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00.
